This painting was suggested by the stunning coastline near Charldon Herring in Dorset and more specifically by the old inn sign (now removed) at the pub in the village. The sign which was executed in a charming naive cartoon style showed a sailor returning home from sea only to find his wife in the arms if her lover.
I have added to the narrative somewhat and included a coastal stretch not in fact visible from the village. I have tried to catch "the spirit of place" - a rather remote corner of Dorset which became a literary enclave in the 1930's.
This painting is 100cm x 70cm and is acrylic on canvas.
