I was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England and educated there in the 1960s. Later, I was awarded a Honours Degree in Fine Art with Art History, at Falmouth School of Art in Cornwall, where my tutors included Patrick Heron and Terry Frost.

A teaching career in Lancashire and Dorset followed, during which time I continued to produce and exhibit my own work. In 2001, I left the school environment to concentrate on my own work and take up a career lecturing on the History of Art for the Workers Education Association (WEA). I live in Poole, Dorset, with my wife Celia. We have one grown up son, Luke who is married to Suzie.
